Chapter 1606 – Montgomery GI Bill® – Selective Reserve (MGIB-SR)

Chapter 1606 is an educational program for members who are actively participating in the Selected Reserve, to include the:

  • Army Reserve; Army National Guard
  • Naval Reserve
  • Air Force Reserve; Air National Guard
  • Marine Corps Reserve
  • Coast Guard Reserve

Basic eligibility for Chapter 1606 – Selective Reserve requires:

  • A 6-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve
  • Completion of Initial Active Duty for Training (IADT)
  • Satisfactory participation in required Selected Reserve training
  • Completion of High School or GED

The Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security (Coast Guard) determine who’s eligible for Chapter 1606.

Entitlement:  Generally provides up to 36 months of education benefits

Delimiting Date:  Generally 14 years from beginning date of eligibility, or on the day student leaves the Selected Reserve

Chapter 1606 – Montgomery GI Bill® – Selective Reserve (MGIB-SR) Benefits:

  • Students receiving Chapter 1606 benefits are paid a monthly stipend based on their enrollment status.
  • Students receiving CH 1606 must verify their enrollment monthly by logging in to:  Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE) –  or they can call 1-877-823-2378.
