SANDY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN RESPIRATORY CARE
Scholarships to support Respiratory Care students who demonstrate commitment to compassionate patient care.
BENEFACTOR BACKGROUND
The Sandy Endowed Scholarship in Respiratory Care was established in October 2014 in loving memory of Sandy Cudd. The Ralph C. Wilson Foundation funded this scholarship to benefit a student in the Department of Respiratory Care. The Wilson’s are passionate in their support of caregivers who help those in need, and loved ones of those who are ill. This scholarship honors Sandy’s fortitude as well as the great care she received by Respiratory Therapists. Sandy was diagnosed with Tuberculosis in 2004. She was a determined fighter for 9 years until her death in 2013. Through those years of rehab, surgery, therapy and doctors she was always positive and looking forward. She never dwelled on her illness and appreciated every day. The loves in Sandy’s life were her faith, her family, and her friends. Sandy had a spirit that touched everyone.
DAVID C. SHELLEDY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN RESPIRATORY CARE
Scholarships to students who exhibit potential in leadership within the field of Respiratory Care.
BENEFACTOR BACKGROUND
Dr. David Shelledy, who served as Chair of the Department of Respiratory Care for over 10 years, is also past president of the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC) and the current Dean of the School of Health Professionals. This scholarship was created to honor his contributions toward helping create a leading program in Respiratory Care at the UT Health Science Center.
DONALD C. STEPHENSON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN RESPIRATORY CARE
Support scholarships for students enrolled in the Respiratory Care Program.
BENEFACTOR BACKGROUND
The Donald C. Stephenson Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Respiratory Care was created in 2007 for the support of students in the Respiratory Care program within the School of Health Professions. Donald C. “Sonny” Stephenson was an industrial electrician with his own business in Carizo Springs, Texas. He was a gifted and agile athlete who loved to box until he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1995 and lost his battle with it in 2002. The endowed scholarship, created by his family and friends, honors his courage and memory.
DAVID L. VINES ENDOWMENT FOR CLINICAL EXCELLENCE IN RESPIRATORY CARE
Support scholarships for students enrolled in the Respiratory Care Program who are in good academic standing, have completed at least two clinical rotations in respiratory care, demonstrated excellence in patient interaction and empower patients or the patient’s family through education.
Selection factors:
- Respiratory care faculty, clinical faculty, and preceptors may submit written nominations annually to the SHP scholarship committee.
- SHP Committee will evaluate the eligibility of nominees
- Nominee interviews will be conducted by Respiratory Therapy Scholarship Committee comprised of Respiratory Therapy Chair, Scholarship Committee Chair, Director of Clinical Education, and one clinical faculty member or clinical preceptor selected by the Director of Clinical Education
- Approval of recipients by the SHP Scholarship Committee, and in coordination with the current University guidelines for student scholarships
BENEFACTOR BACKGROUND
The David L. Vines Endowment for Clinical Excellence in Respiratory Care was established in 2009 for the benefit of the Department of Respiratory Care in the School of Health Professions. David Vines, M.H.S., RRT, was the Interim Chair of the Department of Respiratory Care and Director of UT Allied Health Therapeutics, a rehabilitation therapy clinic at the School of Health Professions. Dr. Vines was also instrumental in creating a new international respiratory care affiliation with Chang Gung University in Taiwan, which promoted faculty and staff members from both universities to work together in clinical training and research.
