Chapter 1606 – Montgomery GI Bill® – Selective Reserve (MGIB-SR)
Chapter 1606 is an educational program for members who are actively participating in the Selected Reserve, to include the:
- Army Reserve; Army National Guard
- Naval Reserve
- Air Force Reserve; Air National Guard
- Marine Corps Reserve
- Coast Guard Reserve
Basic eligibility for Chapter 1606 – Selective Reserve requires:
- A 6-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve
- Completion of Initial Active Duty for Training (IADT)
- Satisfactory participation in required Selected Reserve training
- Completion of High School or GED
The Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security (Coast Guard) determine who’s eligible for Chapter 1606.
Entitlement: Generally provides up to 36 months of education benefits
Delimiting Date: Generally 14 years from beginning date of eligibility, or on the day student leaves the Selected Reserve

Students receiving Chapter 1606 benefits are paid a monthly stipend based on their enrollment status.
