Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act – Closed

Acknowledgement

UT Health San Antonio has signed and returned to the Department of Education the Certification and Agreement and the assurance that the institution has used, or intends to use, no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

 

Allocation

UT health San Antonio has received an allocation of $772,901 for direct-to-student grants under the CARES Act.

 

Distribution

UT Health San Antonio has distributed $772,901 from the CARES Act to 741 students facing financial hardship as a result of the campus disruption from COVID-19 as of June 9th, 2020.

 

Eligibility

In order to receive funds through the CARES Act grant, students must be able to show they meet the eligibility criteria under Section 484 of the Higher Education Act (HEA):

  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a degree or certificate program.
  • Not be enrolled in elementary or secondary school.
  • For currently enrolled students, be making satisfactory academic progress.
  • Not owe an over-payment on Title IV grants or loans.
  • Not be in default on a Title IV loan.
  • File “as part of the original financial aid application process” a certification that includes
      • A statement of educational purpose.
      • Student’s SSN.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or national, permanent resident, or other eligible noncitizen.
  • Have returned fraudulently obtained Title IV funds if convicted of or pled guilty or no contest to charges.
  • Not have fraudulently received Title IV loans in excess of annual or aggregate limits.
  • Have repaid Title IV loan amounts in excess of annual or aggregate limits if obtained inadvertently.
  • Have Selective Service registration verified.
  • Have Social Security Number verified.
  • Not have a federal or state conviction for drug possession or sale, with certain time limitations.

 

Spring 2020 enrollment indicates an estimated 2,100 students at UT Health San Antonio meet this criteria, and if they have been impacted by the pandemic they may apply for emergency grant funds under the CARES Act grant.

Students can submit the Educational Reimbursement Form, while logged into the UT Health Sharepoint site, with your UTHSCSA user name and password.

Students who have not yet filed a FAFSA for the 2019-2020 award year may do so here.  For instructions about this process please visit our web site here.  Please understand this step must be completed before you submit an application for CARES grant funding, and any applications received without a FAFSA on file will be declined immediately.

Process

Applications submitted will be reviewed by the CARES committee to validate eligibility requirements have been met before awarding the grant in the order the applications are received. Students will be awarded grants in the amount of $500, $1,000, $1,500, and $2,000 based on the hardship circumstances listed within the student application. This process will continue until all funds have been awarded.  Students will be notified via campus email accounts of the committee’s decision for either approved or denied requests.

Delivery

Students awarded the grant will receive the funds, via direct deposit or paper check depending upon the student’s preferences as recorded in My Student Center, without consideration of account balances due for tuition and fee charges.

Other Considerations

Amounts received are not taxable to the student and will not be reported on the students 1098T according to guidance published by the IRS.
