Changes in Admissions Requirements:

Substantive changes to admissions requirements will be posted here as they transpire. However, contact programs directly for confirmation of application deadlines, which are subject to change at the programs’ discretion.

PHD: Health Sciences

  • Courses taken outside the United States may be considered for transfer with the approval of the program director, but all such courses must be evaluated by a NACES member and be judged equivalent by U.S. standards.

Doctor of Medicine

  • Matriculation is contingent upon satisfactory completion of all requirements, as outlined on the TMDSAS website, on the admissions website, and contained in the items listed on the Accepted Student Checklist, which includes a background check review (see Medical Student Background Check Policy), submission of final transcripts, completion of the degree plan, satisfactory completion of all prerequisite coursework, and presence at required matriculation events such as White Coat Ceremony and Orientation.

      1. Background check reports and other submitted information are confidential and may only be reviewed by university officials and affiliated clinical facilities in accordance with the Family Educational Records and Privacy Act (FERPA).

BS: Medical Sciences

  • ​Prospective students who are not U.S. citizens and do not have permanent resident status are subject to the same requirements, procedures and acceptance considerations that apply to first-time applicants. Additionally, students will have to meet specified requirements by the Office of International Services (OIS).

MS: Cell Systems and Anatomy – Anatomical Sciences Track

  • Application deadline dates are found on the admission program website. All supporting material such as GRE scores and letters of recommendation must be received before May 1. Spring semester admission (January start date) will not be considered except in very unusual circumstances. Applicants will be notified of the admission decision.

PHD: Nursing

  • Application Process
    1. Submit official transcript(s) from each post-secondary institution attended, even if no degree awarded. International transcripts must be evaluated by an accredited foreign credential service.     2. International students must meet the TOEFL/IELTS requirements of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
  • Requirements Upon Admission
    1. Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Texas or Compact State is not required for application. After admission, a valid nursing license is required in a U.S. state, preferably in Texas for engaging in clinical research or other activities involving patient care. To obtain information about nurse licensure procedures for the State of Texas, consult the Texas Board of Nursing Licensure, or telephone the Texas Board of Nursing at (512) 305-7401.

MS: Dental Hygiene

MS: Medical Laboratory Sciences – Early Acceptance Program – Early Acceptance Program

  • Application Procedures
    1. Students must submit an application to the MLSEAP through Allied Health Centralized Application Service (AHCAS) between April 1 and June 15. Applications are available through the MLSEAP web site. Applications can be submitted by students between 12-60 SCH in their program of study for Biology, Microbiology and Immunology or Chemistry at UTSA. Applications have to be submitted by students on or before the completion of 60 SCH at UTSA in the student’s program of study.

BSN: Nursing – Traditional Track

  • Complete at least 51 of the 60 semester credit hours of required prerequisite courses.  Students must complete all required math and science prerequisite courses at the time of application. Visit the nursing website for a list of required courses. If accepted, the remaining nine hours of non-math/science required courses (example: Introduction to Psychology, Growth & Development and Introduction to Sociology) must be completed prior to the first day of new student orientation.

  • Take the TEAS Exam (either in-person or virtual) with a minimum cut-off score of 65% to be eligible for admission.  A reading score of 69% or below is used to identify students at risk.  Students at risk will be required to complete the Weaver intensive reading program.  (For information regarding the TEAS exam content, visit the TEAS website.)

Master of Deaf Education and Hearing Science

  • To be admitted to the MDEHS Program, applicants must have earned a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, with an overall grade point average of 3.0. Incoming students must have completed a baccalaureate degree in education or a related field (e.g., communication science disorders). Depending on the applicant’s background, pre-requisite coursework in curriculum and instruction from another college or university may be required. In addition, 50 hours of classroom observation and 25 hours of field experience may be required for non-education majors.  Observation and field experience hours may be waived based upon review of undergraduate transcripts and experience.

Master of Speech Language Pathology

  • Applicants must submit online applications through the Communication Sciences and Disorders Centralized Application Service (CSDCAS) provided by the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders.  CSDCAS is a state-of-the-art, web-based application system that offers applicants an effective way to apply to any number of participating programs in speech-language pathology by completing a single application.  It provides a streamlined and user-friendly application process following a standardized procedure that incorporates convenient web-based submission of official transcripts and recommendations. The CSDCAS operational cycle is from September of year 1–April of year 2 (e.g., September 2016-April 2017). The application deadline can be found on the program admission webpage.

MS: Clinical Investigation and Translational Science

  • All transcripts from foreign institutions (including GPA) must be evaluated and submitted by a NACES member foreign credentialing evaluation agency.
  • Faculty who are not tenured, or will not be tenured prior to completing the MSCI-TS Program, are required to submit a letter from the department chair with approval signatures of the dean and the health science center president in accordance with the HOP 3.2.5 Policy.

Master of Physician Assistant Studies

  • Two separate applications, (1) the CASPA application and (2) the PAS Supplemental Application, are required.  Both must be submitted through the Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA) by the application deadline.
  • The CASPA application, the PAS Supplemental Application, official transcripts, two reference letters, all other supporting documents and fees must be submitted and your CASPA status must be listed as completed by the specified CASPA application deadline.
  • Prior-year applicants must submit a new application and are not guaranteed an interview or admission into the program.  Questions about re-application should be directed to the School of Health Professions’ Office of Admissions and Special Programs and/or CASPA.
  • To complete this assessment visit AcuityInsights.app to create an account and register to complete the following assessments:
  • Casper: 90-110 minute online, open-response situational judgment test
  • Meet the minimum technical standards, with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Check course equivalencies for Texas institutions using the Texas Common Course Numbering System (TCCNS)

  • Submission of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) official scores up to five years old. There is no minimum score requirement.
  • TOEFL scores may be waived for international students from countries where English is the official language spoken or for noncitizens of the United States earning a bachelor’s degree or higher in the United States or other countries where English is the official language.  Please refer to the School of Health Professions section of the University Catalog for additional information.
  • Transcripts from institutions outside the United States must be submitted in the original language and must be accompanied by a NACES Members evaluation agency English translation for each course.
  • Campus Location:  The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio also offers its nationally recognized Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) program at The University of Texas Education and Research Center at Laredo in Laredo, Texas. All applicants are asked to select their campus location preference upon submission of their CASPA application as either “San Antonio”, “Laredo”, or “either campus”. Priority for the Laredo campus will be given to selected applicants from Laredo, the surrounding Webb County area, and those who choose the Laredo campus in CASPA. The regional campus provides a unique learning opportunity for individuals demonstrating a predisposition toward aiding and supporting a medically underserved population.  More information can be found about the Laredo Extension Program on the website.
  • Candidates for the UTHSCSA PA program must be able to meet these minimum technical standards with or without reasonable accommodation.

Doctor of Physical Therapy

  • Official transcripts from each college and university currently or previously attended. Applicants who are enrolled in college courses at the time of application should submit an official transcript showing courses in progress.  An updated transcript must be submitted upon completion of the courses. Note: transfer credits indicated on another school’s transcript are not accepted in lieu of submitting the original institution record for that coursework. Transcripts from institutions outside the United States must be submitted in the original language to a NACES Member evaluation agency for English translation and then must be submitted to PTCAS. See PTCAS for full instructions.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE): with a preferred score of 150 or higher in Verbal and 145 or higher in Quantitative.
  • English Proficiency Requirement: Prospective students who are not U.S. citizens and do not have permanent resident status are subject to the same requirements, procedures, and acceptance considerations that apply to first-time applicants. Additionally, students will have to meet specified requirements by the Office of International Services (OIS). Only degree-seeking applicants are eligible to apply for a student visa status. Applicants from countries where English is not the official language are required to submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the Duolingo English Test. The minimum required scores are: TOEFL-84; IELTS – 7.0; Duolingo – 115. Scores on TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo tests taken more than two years prior to the date of application are not acceptable.

CERT: Dental Public Health

  • Admission into the Dental Public Health (DPH) Program is systematic and considers candidate applications based upon a holistic review of each application. Individuals are eligible to apply for admission if they have a dental degree (can be international) and have completed a master’s degree in public health. These criteria for admission are established by the American Board of Dental Public Health. Applications must be postmarked by the application deadline to be considered. Initially, the applications undergo a review for completeness. Applications cannot be reviewed if deemed incomplete by the DPH Program Director. The applications are forwarded to the Dental Public Health Program Committee that consists of members of the teaching faculty, representation from individuals with education in dental public health from the community and the program \director. Applications are reviewed based upon established criteria that include, but are not limited to, oral and written communication, previous work experiences, research/publications, community experiences, potential for success, and academic performance.
  • Applications received after November 1 will not be considered. Applications may be requested by e-mail from dphresidency@uthscsa.edu.

PHD: Translational Science

  • The TS Ph.D. program accepts applications once a year for fall enrollment. Application deadlines can be found on the program’s admission page.
  • For the purpose of evaluating the application, unofficial transcripts are acceptable for inclusion with the application. If selected for admission, official transcripts will be required from all colleges and universities attended and should be sent to the Office of the Registrar at The UT Health SA or the student’s home institution.  Transcripts from foreign colleges/universities must be officially translated into English, if needed, and must also be evaluated, including GPA and U.S. equivalent degree, by any members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES – http://www.naces.org/).
  • The applicant’s post-secondary education was conducted in a country where English is the native language. Consolidation: The following programs are seeking consolidation – Master of Science in Dental Diagnostic Science, Master of Science in Endodontics, Master of Science in Peridontics and Master Science in Prosthodontics were discontinued after the 2012-2013 academic year. The Master’s of Science in Dental Science was pending approval as of April 2013.

Other changes:

The Master of Science in Deaf Education and Hearing Science program moved under the School of Medicine from the School of Health Professions effective Summer 2012.

The Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Dental Hygiene programs moved under the Dental School from the School of Health Professions effective Fall 2012.
